Testimonials from the Heart

First meeting Miss Gabi at The Art Center was at a time when I was feeling vulnerable and unsure of myself. And since it was a new environment for me, I was on edge with my guard up. But after spending time with her, not just one-on-one, but watching her with others, I felt a wonderful sense of calm. (Her laugh alone can put one at ease!) She is kind and caring, and gives encouragement with any type of art project.

Her creativity in the many different art forms, and the ability to inspire others to learn that all Art Is Good, is admirable.

Art is in her soul. She uses her gifts in such a way that not only help others, but help others heal And being lucky enough to experience that healing firsthand, I can say it is a wondrous thing. I am grateful to the beautiful soul that is Miss Gabi, thank you for bringing, and keeping art in my life.

I have known and loved you for a lifetime. You have been inspiring me since you were 6. Since then you’ve inspired so many, shone your incredible light on those with the smallest voices, and showed them the power that they have inside. I believe in YOU and I know you are doing the right thing. You got one thing right, girl...there is only one MISS GABI. We will follow and support you wherever this journey leads. I love you so, sweet friend!!
You are a breath of freshness and creativity each time we talk. I admire your enthusiasm, your drive, your passion, your optimism.
You gave one of my sons the chance to learn and grow with art. You taught him to look at things upside-down sometimes when you want to draw, he is now a graphic artist and loves his field. Thank you for you’re dedication to the students.
My son participated in your wonderful summer kids camp and loved it! The projects were so creative and fun thus why not only my son but numerous others felt the same.
I am truly grateful for YOU..... difficult circumstances brought me to the Latrobe Art Center, and if not for your kindness and gentleness, and ease of guidance, I would not have had the positive experience that I did. I went there, once, when you happened to be at another location, and I did not have the same peaceful feeling I would get just knowing you were there. Thank you Gabi
We are blessed by your vision and energy.

You truly embody what Fred Rogers was all about... EVERYONE is special and has a place in your world. It is a shame not everyone is so open minded and as welcoming to others. You helped make the Latrobe Art Center a beautiful place for ALL.
Gabi you are a kind, wonderful and amazing person!! Always positive and filling our town with your incredible spirit!!
To me the Latrobe Art Center is full of Love , respect and fun. I knew there was a deep connection and now I know this really came from God and was channeled through you. Thank you for showing us how to live a richer life no matter what hand we are dealt.
Our kids love to paint and draw and I know even from Art Camp last year, they believed they had a masterpiece because of you.
LAC was much more than just a building. It was a living, vibrant, joyous entity, and you were it’s heart and soul. I will always appreciate your support and encouragement, both of which gave me the confidence to consider myself an “Artist”. You did the same for so many others particularly the children . Wherever you go and whatever you do everyone and everything you touch will will benefit and prosper.. Thank you so much, Gabi, for everything.
Fred is smiling down on you and thanking you for fulfilling his vision. You are truly special.
You have been the Latrobe Art Center’s heart and soul.
Gabi, you’ve completed a beautiful canvas. That’s what artists do. You visualize something in your mind, close your eyes, open them and begin to paint. Your easel is not empty, it never will be. Your brushes are simply getting set for a new project, your palette awaits fresh color. Your heart will draw the image.
You were the best thing to happen to the Art Center. It grew very fast under your directorship.
You have taken the vision & with God’s help you have developed a beautiful place in what could have been a very empty area. Your spirit will remain in those walls & through all those who’s lives you have touched.

Letters: Dear Miss Gabi,

My daughter, Addison, is six years old and is in first grade.  She has attended single session art workshops, holiday events, and several week-long summer programs at the Latrobe Art Center.  Why did we start going to L.A.C.? Addison has always shown an interest and talent in the arts.  I had heard how wonderful Miss Gabi and her staff were and decided to “check it out”.  Why do we continue to attend L.A.C. programs?  One needs to actually experience a L.A.C. program to fully comprehend that answer.  The programs are outstanding!  Being an elementary educator myself, I am constantly impressed by the friendly caring staff, Miss Gabi’s artistic knowledge and creativity, and the remarkable organization of every aspect of the programs.  When we enter the art center, we are always greeted with energetic smiles, and everyone calls Addison by name.  The dedicated and hardworking L.A.C. staff clearly enjoy their jobs and make us feel comfortable and welcome.  Miss Gabi is just marvelous!  She not only also always has a smile, but the art knowledge that she provides in her programs is unbelievable.  Just this summer, Addison learned how to mix media while having LOTS of fun!  The organization of each program and attention to all details is amazing.  Every program has a clear theme and details always creatively connect.  The focus is always on making the arts fun and inspiring for the children involved!

Addison is deaf and wears Cochlear implants.  When I signed her up for her first program, I was highly impressed that Miss Gabi already knew about proximity to the speaker.  She also naturally knew to check in with Addison to be sure that she heard her instructions.  The whole L.A.C. staff goes above and beyond to make necessary accommodations for all their participants…from the shy child who is trying their first class away from mom to the child with a disability.  Living in Latrobe, we are very grateful to have the L.A.C. so close to us!  I highly recommend the L.A.C. to all parents who I get share our positive experiences with.  When I asked Addison what she likes best about the L.A.C., she smiled and said, “I like that I get to design my own creations.  I love Miss Gabi and the art center!”

Miss Gabi and The Latrobe Art Center ….from the Amatuccis

Putting into words what the art center means to me seems a bit unsurmountable.    Sometimes, when trying to describe something to my children, I go back to good old Merriam-Webster to ensure that my interpretation is correct.  When trying to sum up the Latrobe Art Center, I thought, why not try this.  Merriam-Wester describes art as “a skill acquired by experience, a branch of learning, and the conscious use of skill and creative imagination, especially in the production of aesthetic objects” and center as “a point, area, person, or thing that is most important or pivotal in relation to an indicated activity, interest, or condition.”   To continue to break the Latrobe Art Center down, I discovered that Benjamin Latrobe was none other than a civil engineer with an architect dad, Benjamin Henry.  Our town was named after him because Oliver Barnes considered him that tremendous of a friend back in 1854.

Putting this all together tells the story of the Latrobe Art Center and its director, Ms. Gabi Nastuck.   This dear friend to Latrobe, Gabi has laid out plans and engineered this center, pivotal point in this town for so many to gain skill, create, and experience life in good ol’ Latrobe.  Latrobe is revitalizing in a time when so many need uplifted. When our culture, as I see it, seems to be coming unglued and experiencing chaos, this center symbolizes a place, a central point for our little town, to come together and celebrate art and life!

When I first entered the doors of the Latrobe Art Center about 7 or 8 years ago, it was for a class for my oldest son, Vinny.  Vinny, even then, was an avid hockey and baseball player.  At LAC, though, he could let get to know his “artistic side.”  I remember the very vivid feeling in that class, “This woman, Miss Gabi, has such a handle on these kids; I can’t even keep three kids under control at bath time.”   As the class progressed, though, I remember my amazement at something much more crucial that I observed that day.  Every child in that class was being given the opportunity to CREATE something unique that only he or she could create.  What a powerful gift.  Since then, I have seen Ms. Gabi impart this gift time and time and time again to so many children and adults.  Her leadership has also meant that others have learned how to share and teach.   The gift of art has become a gift that has been shares ten thousand fold if not more.   Everyone who enters the door of the LAC will not be a part of an art show or have items on display.  LAC though, is the place where they can come to experience so many different forms of art while also learning to be themselves and find what lies in their own imagination.   For our family, Ms. Gabi has played a crucial role in helping my children express themselves in different ways, including words and art.   One of my favorite pieces that my son Louie created was one that is a delightful spattering of paint that he designed one Thursday night with the words “Who you are inside is what helps you make and do everything in life.”

While teaching others to discover their originality is central to Ms. Gabi’s role, the LAC also has given Latrobe that pivotal central point for countless celebrations.   If one were to watch a drone’s video of numerous festivities of this little town, the LAC would surely be the epicenter of many with Ms. Gabi’s leadership helping to make residents of other towns envious.   For my own family, the LAC has given us a place within the city limits to celebrate numerous special occasions in a beautiful place, again thanks to Ms. Gabi’s dedication to helping the LAC be all that it can be to so many.

One other crucial role that Ms. Gabi and the LAC has played for my family (and I’m sure in so many families), is that because my daughter, ironically Gabby herself, now has another career choice on her list.  She reports that someday she may want to be an artist and direct an art center.   Ms. Gabi has given this little girl a dream.  Ms. Gabi has made her feel loved at so many stages of her youth and made her see the limitless possibilities that she has.  This is a gift that no one can ever take and without the LAC, one that I don’t know that she would have.

When John and I decided to stay in Latrobe, it was because of our own love of this town and our true desire to continue to be a part of it.   We loved Latrobe before the LAC and now we love it even more.  We are blessed to have the LAC.    Ms. Gabi has helped our kids to build a foundation of confidence and joy in what they can do, what they can create, WHO THEY CAN BE.  I believe her joy, her personality, her drive, and her leadership give all of that to anyone who walks through the doors of the LAC.  Mr. Rogers said “the best thing a person can feel is to be accepted as they are, not as they will be then they grow up, but as they are now, right this very minute.”  Thank you, Ms. Gabi and the LAC for making all our minutes with you ones of genuine acceptance and love.

A few years ago we discovered the Latrobe Art Center. That’s when we were blessed to cross paths with Miss. Gabi. Since 2014 our son Mateo has enjoyed all that this magical place has to offer. We say magical because if you met Miss. Gabi and her staff you would know why. They created an environment that is welcoming, accepting, and inspires creativity.

It all started when our son Mateo was turning five. A wonderful person by the name of Ann told us to check out Latrobe Art Center for his party. This is when we fell in love with the art center and of course Miss. Gabi. She was engaging, full of excitement , and interested in all of Mateo’s big ideas for his first kid party. Mateo was on cloud 9 after that day and a love of art was born. What an awesome and unique experience his party turned out to be.

Fast forward to present day, three birthday parties, school field trips, several art camps, and painting parties under his belt ,all by the age of 8. Miss. Gabi asks questions, listens, and walks the kids through their own creative process to put their imaginations on paper. She is a true gift to us and this community. Thank you for encouraging and fostering his love of art. You Rock!!!!!
